Fr. Ron's Blog

Dear Friends,

Thank you to all who took the time to stop by the mock up pew and share their reaction with me or one of the other priests. What surprised me most was that the overwhelming choices were either of the two extremes, either the lighter end on the right or the darker end on the left. The "odd man out" was the one in the middle. A final choice has not yet been made. But as you can see, the project has begun with the removal of the first section, the two transepts, as phase 1. First, the pews will be stripped and after that stained. We've been told that each phase will take approximately 4 weeks. Please be patient if your favorite place to sit is "out of commission" for a few weeks. And as the old sign would say, "pardon our appearance." Hopefully, the floors will be done in each of those areas while the pews are missing. If you've ever tried to coordinate the different trades in your own renovation projects, you know what I mean by "hopefully." Let's all hope that it works out.

Back again to the Annual Appeal. The Appeal is made to fund the pastoral life of the Church of Newark, and nothing else. In my talks I have always stressed the support the Appeal gives to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. 48,000 individuals, in 84 programs at 26 sites are served by Catholic Charities and the Archdiocesan support helps Catholic Charities do this. I know this because I have been a member of the Board of Trustees for over 25 years. At the same time, the Appeal helps to fund the chaplaincy programs in hospitals, prisons and on college campuses, both secular and Catholic. And it supports so many of the pastoral programs of the Archdiocese that assist parishes in the parish mission of bringing the Gospel to the world. And if you make a gift, you can restrict that gift to any of the ministries listed on the pledge envelope or the website.

As I have said so many times, my goal has always been to increase the number of donors from Mount Carmel as a sign of our pledge to support all of these good causes. So far, we are still behind the number of donors from last year and so I make another request/ invite to every parish household to join in this effort of support. I know with inflation, these are tough times. (It cost me $40. just this morning to put a half a tank of gas in my car). But can you afford to make a pledge of $100? Which you can pay off from now until December 31, 2022. If you think you can do that, please go on line to the Archdiocesan Appeal icon of the homepage. Be sure to identify Mount Carmel- Ridgewood as your parish. For those who still may not be using a computer, there will be some extra pledge envelopes at the doors of the church next weekend. While December 31 is the date by which all pledges must be fulfilled, those pledges must be made by June 30, 2022 to qualify for the rebate to the parish, so please don't put it off any longer. Thank you for your help in this worthy effort.

Finally, 119 of our ninth graders will be confirmed this weekend, with another 46 to be confirmed on June 11th. All the names will appear on the bulletin cover on that weekend. As with our first communicants, the parish should be encouraged that 165 young men and women from the parish seek the presence of the Holy Spirit to help them to give witness to Christ in our world. It should be for all of us another sign of the life and vitality of this parish community, as well as a challenge to each of us to ask ourselves how we contribute to that life and vitality. Please pray for the entire group that they be, for the Church, the sign of Christ's love for the world and a reminder that the world needs a healing that only the Christ can give.

God Bless,
Fr. Ron
