Dear Friends,

Five "attention getters," - events which I would like to put in your minds today.

-This weekend, we celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God " On September 30, 2019 (only 6 months before the pandemic in the United States), Pope Francis proclaimed the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time as the Sunday of the Word of God In that proclamation, the Pope reminded us that the life of the Christian must be marked by his/her relationship with the "living word" that the Lord never tires of speaking to his people. He calls the Bible the "people's book," which speaks to us of Christ and helps us to believe in all that He has said and done. The Scripture is a fascinating treasure of God's relationship with the people He has chosen, first forming the people of the Old Covenant and then, the people of the New Covenant and their successors-us. We are "people of the Book. And the Book, Sacred Scripture, speaks to us, not only of the on-going formation of those relationships, but of our relationship with that very same God and His presence in our lives. To highlight the importance of Scripture in our relationship with our God, and especially with our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Book of the Gospels will be "enthroned" in the sanctuary after the reading of the Gospel at each Mass. Elsewhere in this bulletin you can find some practical suggestions about ways to incorporate more reading of Scripture in your daily lives.

-Saturday of this weekend is the 49th Anniversary of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision that opened the floodgates to the millions of abortions that have followed On the national level, the Supreme Court will take up the issue once again in its current term. On the state level, the legislature passed and the governor signed into law a bill which expands, codifies and protects reproductive rights in the State of New Jersey. On the previous page, please read the joint statement of the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey on the passage of this bill into law. As we have for 49 years now, please continue to pray for a deepening of respect for all human life, as we continue to see that respect crumble around us.

-On Page 5 of this bulletin you will find a great article on the up-coming SYNOD called by Pope Francis. I wrote about it in last week's bulletin, which you can still read on-line on the parish website. Today's article goes into it again with the why's of the whole effort and a little bit more of an explanation of what will happen at the two "listening sessions" the parish is sponsoring. Please be sure to read it and mark one of the dates on your calendars to be part of the whole process.

-Also mark your calendar for Wednesday evening, February 2nd at 7:30 in the Parish Center. Bishop Saporito, the Episcopal Vicar of Bergen County, will meet and greet any and all members of the parish. Come and get to know the Bishop who is most directly responsible for the life of the Church in Bergen County.

-You may have received a mailing or have read that the Annual Appeal for the Archdiocese was to begin this weekend. Because I was originally scheduled to be away, we moved it to next weekend, 1/29-1/30. Even though my plans changed, we decided to do it next weekend so we could properly celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God. Next weekend, and not Super Bowl Sunday will be the Annual Appeal weekend.

So much is happening. Hopefully and prayerfully, the lessening of Covid-19 s grip on our world, on our country and on our society will be happening at the same time.

God Bless,
Fr. Ron
