Fr. Ron's Blog

Dear Friends,

As promised, I took a couple of weekends off from a column in the bulletin. But it is weird for me to be writing now. I took off six days last week to go to PA. When I normally do that at the end of the summer, I return after Labor Day and it's full speed ahead into the new program year. So it's strange coming back and realizing there were still almost two full weeks until Labor Day. Nothing is normal.

I want to make you aware of a couple of liturgical celebrations that might impact your own calendars. You know we have a lot of catching-up to do relative to the celebrations of baptisms, 1st Eucharist and Confirmation. Baptisms are getting scheduled at various times and dates to accommodate the requests of the families. To date, we have celebrated 3 confirmation ceremonies. This weekend, we will begin the celebration of 1st Holy Communion for our rising 3rd graders. Because of the limitations on the maximum numbers allowed in the church, we have had to schedule multiple celebrations. More multiple celebrations than we would have had in April/May. To accommodate family schedules, as well as the availability of the church, ceremonies have been scheduled on some Saturdays, sometimes two on one day, like this weekend, other times, only one. In addition, in a return to a practice we haven't used in a decade or more, some of the ceremonies have been scheduled for Sundays. And since they will all be live-streamed, they will be celebrated at the 11:00AM Mass. We will celebrate 1st Communion at the 11:00 Mass on August 30, September 13, 20, & 27. At each of those masses, six of our children will receive Jesus for the first time. I just want everyone to be aware who may be coming to those masses. In addition, there will be celebrations for 1st Communion on the following Saturdays, August 29, September 5, 12, & 26. As I have mentioned, we have already had three celebrations of Confirmation. We will continue with the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on September 12, 18, 19 and October 2 & 3. Although limited numbers of family may be present, the parish will live-stream all of them for the sake of those who could not attend. It is our purpose and hope to make these special moments in the journey of our children and teenagers as memorable and inspiring as they should have been in normal times. Please pray for all of these children and young people.

By way of reminder, please remember to register online or by phone when you would like to attend Sunday Mass. There is a dual purpose in this process, first, for contact tracing, in the event of an outbreak and, second, to be faithful to the capacity limits set by the Governor. As I write this, the State has announced the openings of gyms, but not indoor dining and no increase in the maximum in churches which still stands at 100. We have noticed in recent weeks an increase in the number of walk-ins. While we will not turn people away, we do want to remain within our limits. Especially by going online, you will be able to know whether a particular mass has reached its limit and plan accordingly, especially with reference to the 11:00AM when 1st Communion will be celebrated. Who knows, maybe the Governor will surprise us between now and Labor Day and raise that number.

Finally, this is Fr. Gustavo's last weekend with us. As I mentioned, I want to thank him for his enthusiasm for, and dedication to, his ministry as a priest and for everything he did in these abnormal days of Covid, especially for the Hispanic community, to keep the Lord close to us and we close to Him. Please, if you see him this weekend, wish him well.

For those who still have vacation to look forward to, may the days be filled with warmth, sunshine, laughter and rest. Whether you re here or somewhere else, may you all have a happy Labor Day weekend.

Be well, be safe and God bless,
Fr. Ron
