SCRIPTURE REFLECTION OF THE MONTH

ourfatherwords

“Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. Let us not come into temptation, but deliver us from evil. “ (Matthew 6:9-13)

This scripture should sound familiar to you. This is where the “Our Father”, the prayer you hear every week in mass, comes from. In this scripture, Jesus is teaching the disciples how they should pray.  Sometimes, we get into the habit of getting so into our routine of praying recited prayers, that we forget what they are actually saying. Let’s take a closer look at this one.

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”- this is our opening, here we praise God, telling him how holy He is. Next, “Let your kingdom come, let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”- here we are asking God to allow His plans to unfold in our lives. When we live as God wants us to, we know that the Kingdom of God exists on Earth, just like it does in heaven. Next, “Give us today our daily bread”- we are asking God to give us whatever it is we might need most that day, emotionally, physically or spiritually. “ Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”- this line reminds us that we may have people who hurt us, but we also hurt others. We need to seek forgiveness but also be patient with others as God has been patient with us. Finally, “Let us not come into temptation, but deliver us from evil”- We are asking God to give us the strength to avoid sin, and to help us make good, and holy decisions.

This prayer essentially teaches us how to ask God for everything we need, but we need to remember to not just say it, but to pray it!
